Petroleum Engineering Universities in Canada

There are four petroleum engineering universities in Canada. They are Dalhousie University, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, University of Alberta and University of Regina. The contact details are listed below.

Dalhousie University

The undergraduate mining engineering degree is fully accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) which means that graduates will be able to register as Professional Engineers once they have met post-graduation work experience and professional examination requirements. The core degree program covers the basic science and mathematics common to all engineering degrees and discipline-specific material including:

• Mining methods

• Unit operations

Petroleum drilling and well completions

• Mineral beneficiation

• Mining and structural geology

• Rock mechanics

• Ventilation

• Computer-aided design

• Blasting

• Mineral economics

• Operations research

In the final two academic terms, students can specialize in one of two options: Mining Option (which includes mineral processing) and Petroleum Option (for details please visit Mining Engineering curricula). Option-specific coursework is as follows:

1. Mining Option

• Drainage and dewatering

• Advanced rock mechanics

• Mining and Environment

• Advanced mineral processing

2. Petroleum Option

• Reservoir engineering

• Advanced petroleum engineering

• Enhanced recovery

• Offshore drilling and production

Northern Alberta Institute of Technology

Petroleum Engineering Technology is a two-year diploma program that prepares the graduate for employment in the upstream petroleum industry. The expanding oil sands development sector also provides tremendous opportunities for Petroleum Engineering Technology graduates.

The program consists of the following areas of study:

• petroleum geology

• drilling and well planning

• formation evaluation and reservoir engineering

• oil and gas production techniques

• project management and economics

• environmental protection and safety

Theory is complemented by practical training activities during a one-week session at the Enform Oil and Gas Production facility in Nisku. In addition, all students complete a two-week work experience placement in Year 2 of the program.

University of Alberta

For over 50 years, the University of Alberta has offered the only accredited BSc Petroleum Engineering degree program in Canada.

Petroleum engineers are involved in the exploration and development of oil and gas fields. They apply the principles of geology, physics, and the engineering sciences to the recovery, development, and processing of petroleum. Petroleum engineers recommend the best location for drilling a well, determine if the well contains significant quantities of hydrocarbons that can be recovered economically, and make decisions regarding appropriate well completion techniques.

Career possibilities:

– Oil sands extraction technology design

– Policy making and consultation

– Exploration

– Drilling and processing

University of Regina

Petroleum Systems Engineers develop techniques to efficiently recover oil, gas, and other minerals while reducing environmental impacts using various pollution remediation and greenhouse gas reduction techniques.

The Petroleum Systems Engineering (PSE) undergraduate program teaches evaluation, design, and management of technologies used in evaluating reserves and in oil and gas production and treatment. Advanced computer utilization and automation are integrated into the program.

Students graduate with a Bachelor of Applied Science (B.A.Sc.) in Petroleum Systems Engineering

Students in Co-operative Education graduate with a B.A.Sc. (Co-op) in Petroleum Systems Engineering

Students in the Internship Program graduate with a B.A.Sc. (Internship) in Petroleum Systems Engineering

The PSE program is fully-accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board. An accredited program is one that is evaluated and monitored through the CEAB by Engineers Canada, the national organization for the provincial and territorial associations that govern and license professional engineers. An accredited program ensures that graduates will be eligible to be licensed as professional engineers in Canada.
